Really great learning and practicing really helpful

  2. Agustín Montero

I love all Mark courses. This one is also an excellent course for all player levels. You can do it quickly or you can make the most of it in every lesson. I tried first to read the sheet music before watch the lesson video. When I have learned the groove, I translated it to other keys with Youtube backingtracks. And finally I tried to slap it. Mark is the best teacher with a clear english language for no english native people like me. 100% recomended

  3. gigibla0 (verified owner)

I’m doing volume 1 and I’m very happy. Each groove helps to develop a specific skill and the variety keeps things interesting and challenging. The explanations are clear and concise as always and I’m also using it to learn to read music a bit and for ear training.
I feel I’m getting a lot out of this course and it’s great value.

  4. Alex Tulin (verified owner)

This is a very well structured course. It starts from simple grooves and gradually increases the difficulty. Mark explains very well every lesson making it easy to understand. I highly recommend this course!

  5. jbk-0619

The course materials were very helpful and well organise making it easy to follow. As a beginner I found the the lessons to be valuable tools. I am halfway through the module. and I am positively sure the rest of the lessons will be equally good. I am having fun.

  6. cfbass (verified owner)

Very happy with all of my Talking Bass Courses Mark is a great teacher.

  7. Chris Smeeton

In his unmistakably unique style, Mark has crafted a course which is clear, practical, systematically structured and fun to do.
Working on grooves in a variety of styles, the course helps you focus on important aspects such as rhythm and harmony as well as working on concentration, stamina and holding down a „cleaner“ groove. For me it was a super course, enabling me to fight against my inherent sloppiness.
The theoretical element is well-dosed for beginners and for improvers it provides an excellent review.
I just wish I had had the opportunity to do a course like this earlier on in my bass-learning journey.
Whether you are a beginner or improver this course is highly recommended.
Thanks Mark! Top notch as usual.

  8. Matthew (verified owner)

It took me a while to finish this course. There’s a ton of content!
Afterwards, I went back through it and reviewed everything one more time.
The grooves that I found difficult to play the first time were much easier the second time round.
I see that as progress. I’m pretty pleased with this course and what it did for my playing.
I would definitely recommend this as a good starting point after the beginners course.
Thanks for the great course Mark!

Great Course Mark, I bought it because although I was getting along really well with the theoretical and technique side of things, I was getting away from the bread and butter playing, so this course has been ideal to start getting in some solid grooves. Once again, a great course, Thank Mark :)

  10. Rob Randall (verified owner)

As other Talking Bass courses the Groove trainer is perfect for those wishing to improve their skills, Mark gives excellent tuition backed up with play along sound tracks plus easy to follow workshop manuals, which unlike attending physical music classes were you can forget what has been said or shown you have this lesson material with you to revisit as many times as you like for as long as you like, Thanks Mark.

  11. Jimmy Blair

If you’re looking for a set of exercises to improve your technique, I highly recommend Groove Trainer!! Mark comes up with some good lines, explains the theory, and gives you suggestions for fingering with both fretting hand and plucking. My bete noire before doing Volume I of this course was working across the strings alternate plucking, while moving the muting thumb between the E and the A strings. Some of the grooves address this specific issue. Working through them over and over is getting me over this hump. Many thank Mark for boosting my bass level!!

  12. Jim Powell (verified owner)

I can easily play the grooves in part 1 and look forward to part 2 in that respect. The real power of this course, especially in part 1, is Mark showing us how to lock in with the different components of the drum kit. This has been most valuable to me. Sure, other courses give you a drum track, but Mark is basically giving us some basic drum lessons and while doing so, improving our ear. This is my first purchase from Mark and like his YouTubes, he’s sharp, quick to the point, with expert and detailed instruction. A great value!

  13. bugs1919

This is another great talkingbass course that not only covers grooves and rhythms but provides focus on theory and technique as well. Thus, not only one develops a rhythmic feeling, covering all kinds of styles and rhythmic variations but most of the grooves are also great technique workouts while getting a feel for non-4/4 rhythms.

  14. Brian Murray (verified owner)

This course is really rewarding. There is a steep learning curve between Modules 1 & 2, but as you continue to knock out each Groove, you’ll feel yourself able to tackle other songs more easily and diversifying your technique. The basslines covered are from a variety of genres (country, rock, latin, pop, blues & even metal!) which makes it more interesting for bass players of all backgrounds. The backing drum tracks help you build stamina by playing the lines in time for minutes at a time. Highly recommend this couse to anyone looking to up their bass game.

  15. Randy Daniels

Mark does an outstanding job of explaining each lesson. So far, only in the beginning stages of this course and have learned a ton, from changing strings to understanding all of the chords on the bass. Highly recommend this course for all those who are new to bass and able to play a few songs.

  16. Unknown Member (verified owner)

I really enjoyed this course. The first section is a simple overview of how music works (rhythm, chords, intervals, and triads). If you don’t know any theory, or how to read music, this is a great start.

The second half contains instruction on how to play 60 bass lines, along with backing tracks. It’s a great way for beginners to advance from simple whole note riffs up to a bit more advanced lines. It covers various musical styles (rock, jazz, disco, Bossa, etc.), and Mark gives you guidance on how to listen to the backing tracks, how to count beats, how to finger the notes (on both hands), and how to feel and implement the groove.

I really like Mark’s style, and how he gets right to the point, but still finds ways to teach you more than just the line you’re learning, without each video being overly long winded. Looking forward to starting Module 2.

  17. Curtis Maher

Mark is a fantastic teacher, haven’t been disappointed from any of the courses.

  18. Rodrigo Vargas Usach (verified owner)

Great course really helped me to level up my playing, groove & feel, Mark is an outstanding teacher as you all know. Some lessons can be quite challenging, nothing too much. Drum tracks are great for improving time, counting and locking in with drums. Just finished the lessons and would happily redo them, there’s a lot to be learned in a second run of the course, focusing on details and transposing to different keys.

  19. JUSTIN LOWRIE

Apart from getting all the basics down. This might be the best course I’ve ever purchased.

  20. Graham

I really like the Groove courses; they provide an excellent practical application of the more theoretical Chord Tones and Scales Essentials. Groove 2 builds on Groove 1 into 16th notes and more complex grooves. All explained clearly and professionally as usual by Mark. Highly recommended.

  21. Barney Kister

I gave this course 5 stars but it really would have been better had I completed prior to several of the other courses. The first half keys in on a lot of the content of other courses I have completed so a fair amount of redundancy, which is not necessarily a bad thing. The groves cover a broad set of music styles, so those with narrow focus in music taste might not appreciate all of the parts. I would suggest this course to be taken after the first couple of basic classes to maximize interest.

  22. Nick Notofranco

When I joined Talking bass, this is the musical education I was expecting. I have not disappointed in any of the education I have received thus far. Another great course, now on to Groove 2.

So, I was a little confused where to begin when I first found this site. If you’re brand new start with the new courses. If you’re coming from like BassBuzz you can skip them and you maaay be able to skip these as well. That’s up to you. This groove course gets you playing a bunch of different grooves. Also, the first part of each of the groove courses, he teaches you some stuff. Me? I’m quite happy I purchased this course cause I either don’t know a lot of what he taught, or it helped reinforce things I learned on bass buzz. After this course, I’m either gonna do Chord Tones or Sight Reading. Or I may just jump to the slap course cause its my favorite thing. But get this course to learn a little music reading and a little theory, and then learn all kinds of different grooves. If you’re a beginner and haven’t really played anything before, definitely, definitely get this course. The first one is like rock and blues and stuff, the second course adds swing style to the grooves. Second is harder than the first. It’s all experience one way or the other. I still don’t understand theory all that much, but hopefully in the Chord Tones course I’ll get a better understanding. Hope this helped someone!

  24. Brandon Gallagher

Excellent course! It starts from very easy whole note lines following a progression to syncopated 8th note lines. Doing it this way helps you learn slowly but surely how to stay accountable to a beat and ensure you’re in the pocket. I highly recommend it!

  25. Shug

This course has been truly beneficial to my bass skills. Mark is very thorough and really goes into a lot of areas I was secretly avoiding. But now I have a much better understanding of music in general. The lessons about the relationship with drums was an eye opener. I’ve been jamming with a drummer lately and really felt I had some applicable knowledge coming into the jam. Mark is a no-nonsense teacher…which is what I wanted.
Sign up…you will be so glad you did.

  26. Mark Mahoney

Another excellent course from Mark. This cover’s a variety of styles each with their own technical challenge. The grooves are explained and broken down in to small manageable chunks and taught in a clear manner. At $69 this is steal! Especially when you consider the production and time that went in to creating both modules. Use it to augment your practicing in a style (I’m working on finger funk a la’ Rocco) or make it your entire practice routine. You can’t miss.

  27. Elkmar Winter

I love this course. It combines building technical skills with a 100% link to grooves in a band. This is exactly the situation most of us are longing for. Marks way of explaining things also match my way of thinking.
Even after you worked yourself through the load of different styles (which in itself is a fountain of inspiration) and ideas you can then use the loops to warm up for the real work.
So: thumbs up and keep grooving!

  28. Jim Boehmj

Great course just what i wanted and needed. really good steps between lessons. well worth the cost (I got mine on sale which was even a better deal)

  29. Agustín Montero

I love this course. You will learn grooving from the begining and Mark will explain super easy all aspects of each groove (harmony, technique…) I also like so much the condensed first part theory. I’m also doing reading part 2 course and walking bass course, and in this groove course you can find a wonderful summary of music key aspects. It has helped me a lot to understand things from other courses.
    100% Recommended

Im really enjoying this course im over half way through. I thought it might be too easy. Being online taught I mess around playing tunes what this has shown me the huge pot holes in my bass playing, playing consistently. The lines start off easy and develop as you go along. What i was finding is playing through the riffs repeatedly with the backing track i was making loads of mistakes after a while of playing even on the easy riffs stumbling over myself losing concentration and forgetting what im doing. i would start off well and then stumble. By repetition its building into me the basics of just holding down a groove which im obviously lacking. This has been really great!

  31. Emmanuel Renaut

This is a really good course that builds up very nicely from simple grooves to more complicated grooves. Mark’s courses are great because he is very focused on teaching the module and not go off track like other online courses. The course material is really good and mistake free.

  32. Caroline Eliasson

This course completes the other course that I’m currently also working on. Grooving and improvising isn’t easy. It takes time to learn. However, Mark breaks everything down in a easy-to-understand way. Prepare to groove! :)

  35. Luc

I like the course very much, the step by step aproach helps me a lot, the theorie helps me even more. I can advise every beginner to do this course

  36. Adam Davies

This is possibly the best course I’ve done anywhere on the net (and I’ve done a few!). Starts with a quick crash course (or reminder) of all the key music theory you need for the bass – the important stuff – and then puts it into practice with small (and increasingly difficult) riffs and grooves to work on. Whilst – importantly – explaining how the groove is created, what you’re doing theory-wise, and how best to implement technique. Superb course, Mark!

  37. GT

I am really excited about this course. I have taken other courses on Talking Bass and done dozens of lessons on the site. For less than the price of a single in person lesson, you can’t beat it.

  38. Graham

An amazing course. The expected excellent presentation by Mark and the course content is superbly structured to build up from the basics to some quite advanced 1/8th note grooves. Even the more basic grooves can be used for timing practice either by embellishing with articulations or by using a metronome that sounds only on specific notes e.g. on an “and” or just the “2”.
    Highly reccomended.
