Frequently Asked Questions

What is The Cyborg Bassist series of ebooks?

The Cyborg Bassist series provides a wide variety of etudes for the electric bass player that cover the entire bass fretboard. Many types of musical content are covered from scales to arpeggios to intervals and more.

By running these etudes in a drill-like manner you will develop many areas of your playing including your technique and fretboard knowledge while working on your overall harmony knowledge from a practical perspective.

What is The Cyborg Bassist Scale Bundle?

This bundle contains both Volumes 1 and 2 of The Cyborg Bassist. The combination of both books provide 192 Etudes in both Major and Minor scales through 12 keys.

Are the books digital or hard copy?

The books are downloaded as Ebook PDFs. These can be read on your computer, tablet, phone or printed. We will be looking to publish the books as hard copy through Amazon at some point in the near future.

Are there any video lessons?

Yes, you will have access to 16 video lessons in your My Courses page. The video lessons form a mini course teaching you how to approach the books from a practice perspective. Position shifting, technique and the exercise types are all covered in depth.

What level of player is the book aimed at?

The books are aimed at players of any level but I recommend at least a few months to a year of bass playing experience as a minimum. The exercises are not too difficult when learned in the correct way but they still require a basic grounding in bass technique.

What will I learn?

After completing the books and the course you will have a much better understanding of both major and minor scales and keys over the entire instrument. You will have improved your position shifting to a high level and have the technical facility to move fluidly around the fretboard.

How long is the book and the lessons?

The books are 100 and 102 pages in length and the accompanying courses contain around 50 minutes of video content each.

How are the courses presented? Do I Download Anything?

The courses are hosted on the Talkingbass website so there are no video files to download. The ebooks are downloaded from the main page of the course.

Are there any time limits on downloading the ebook or taking the video course?

No. You can take as long as want. There are no time limits

Do I Have Lifetime Access?

Yes, you have lifetime access to the ebook and course material.

After years of using a hybrid double thumb technique I developed and then finding it’s limits, I started using the Victor Wooten method everyone else does. I found myself in need of lots of beginner style practise to come to grips with a brand new skill that didn’t really come naturally to me. Rather than go over the same old exercises I always used, I looked around for some new ones. Thought I’d give the Cyborg method a shot. And I’m glad I did. Learning all the exercises and fingerings in one key before moving on to the next one is showing up some gaps in my understanding of theory I was unaware of.

I’ve adapted the whole neck exercise to my five string by going up the neck more on the B and E strings. I’ll probably start running the other exercises through those fingerings as well. There might be a market for a 5 string version of the books. I’d probably buy one out of curiosity.

All up these books are an excellent method to learn bass. They would be a bit scary for a complete beginner. But the sooner you learn them the quicker you’ll progress on your instrument. Put some time aside to practise these exercises every day while still playing all the fun stuff that drew you to the bass in the first place.

I’ve been playing guitar for about 50 years and have now taken up bass guitar. I’ve been practising the Cyborg book for major scales for a few months now and at first I found it quite hard to really master and memorise all the different types of etudes. That’s why I decided to first practise exercises 1 (2 octaves) and 2 (running the fretboard) for all the keys and that worked well for me. Now I’m working on the second Cyborg book for minor scales as well and find that I pick up the etudes much easier than when I just started. Both books contain very useful drill exercises for all the major and minor keys and after some time you begin to grasp the three (or four) major areas of the fretboard. Not always fun (hard work), but nonetheless brilliant courses! I can recommend these two books to players of any level. I’ve learned/will learn a lot from them (also very useful for the guitar by the way). When you’ve completely mastered both books, you can always use these etudes as warming up exercises. Thanx a lot, Mark!

I study with the Chord Tone Course and the Cyborg Bassist Books. The cyborg books help me a lot to play harmoniously and fluently fast. The fretboard becomes intuitive and mentally familiar. Thank you.

Great for improving your fretboard knowledge and facilitating moving around the fretboard.
This is a must have not only for beginners but is also improving players.
I would recommend that you get a copy of both books and use them to push your bass playing forwards.

This course has helped me take a huge leap forward in my fretboard knowledge as well as helped me become a more fluid player. And although I finished the course, the material in the course will keep me practicing and growing for some time to come.

In the space of the first few weeks, the drills in this book have unlocked more fretboard knowledge for me than I ever learned in the years wasted just faffing about.
With the focus on fluid movement and position shifts, I’m finding it much easier to intuitively link the fretboard together. Constant practise of these drills is also improving my technique, piece by piece. If you’ve been playing for a little while and have “some” fretboard knowledge, then this is for you. It will take you to the next level in your learning.
