Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Simple Steps To Sight Reading Course?
Simple Steps To Sight Reading is the ultimate guide to reading music on bass guitar. It is a multimedia course using a combination of video lessons, PDF workbooks and MP3 backing tracks to provide the most comprehensive, step-by-step approach to sight reading available today.
What level of player is the course aimed at?
The complete course is aimed at any player from beginner to advanced level. Many advanced bass players are lacking in this very specialized area of playing so the number of playing years and experience is irrelevant. If you cannot read music – you cannot read music and this course serves to take you from the absolute basics of reading through to an advanced professional level whatever your standard.
Volume 2 of the course is intended for readers with an intermediate level of ability.
What Will I Learn?
Volume 2 of the course steps into an intermediate level of reading by introducing many new aspects of music notation.
In terms of pitch, we move through several keys up to a total of 4 sharps and flats. We also look at Minor keys, double sharps and flats and venture further up the fretboard so we can read all the way from open string to 12th fret.
From a rhythmic standpoint, we progress onto 8th notes (including rests and ties), triplets, swing feel, multiple new time signatures including compound time signatures such as 12/8 and 6/8.
As well as the pitch and rhythm lessons, we also look at many music markings and symbols such as grace notes, slurs, staccato marks and much more!
How Long Are The Lessons?
The lesson lengths vary but volume 2 of the course has a combined video length of 7.5 hours. Plenty of material to keep you practicing for weeks, months or years.
How is the course presented? Do I Download Anything?
The course is hosted on the Talkingbass website so there are no video files to download. There is a lesson material zip file containing all of the course material arranged in appropriate folders.

More fantastic resources. Carrying on from volume 1, shaping me to become a better bass player. The content is well presented and easy to digest and understand. There are no time constraints so you take as long as you need on each subject to become confident. I have just reached the end of this volume and practice at least 20 minutes per day, usually longer. I feel ready to move onto volume 3 and look forward to it. Thanks again Mark for all you have provided.

After completing Volume 1 I moved on to this course and it continues Mark’s excellent and clear, staged lessons on learning music. The final sample pieces are definitely a challenge!

A really good course. It made me understand keys, rhythms, and knowledge of the fretboard in an easy way. I first completed volume 1. I would really recomend this course.

I just finished Simple Steps to Sight Reading Vol 2. After some practice I was able to play the Sample Pieces from the beginning to the end with only some little mistakes. Improved it by recording my playing and I was very proud of the result. I must say that the Sight Reading Course for me is the most important course in Mark’s portfolio. You are learning not only to read the notes, it improves the knowledge of the fretboard and rhythm and timing. It is in my opinion the best way to become a better bass player. If you combine it with the technique course and the chord tone essentials and the walking bass course you will get a deep dive into the world of bass playing. I’m looking forward to start the next level in module 3.

Loved this continuation of Volume 1. Certainly not easy, and took lots of time, but I really enjoyed it. Something about noticing yourself slowly get better and faster at reading over time is incredibly satisfying. Mark does a great job of breaking up this daunting task into bite-sized chunks.

Currently about halfway through this course having finished Volume 1 – it follows on perfectly and is really helping me develop my reading skills. Exercises are taking a lot longer to work through now and the workbook is much harder… but, still realistic and every time I complete something new it feels like a real accomplishment and improvement. Loving it!

I recently finished the “Simple Steps To Sight Reading Volume 2” course. It was fun to do the course, but it takes time. I moved from one lesson to the next only when I had the feeling that I mastered the exercises perfectly. At the end of the course I could play the sample pieces when I played them the first time only with small mistakes. But I have to say that I am not a beginner in reading music, but I didn’t read for a long time. In the course I like most the rhythm exercises. Sometimes they look boring, but they aren’t. You get a good rhythmical vocabulary if you practice these exercises seriously.
